| Lions of Medina is a result of a long held desire of mine to honor the men and women who fought for our freedom in Vietnam. The genesis of the
book began in August of 2002. That summer, I found an old family photo
album. I found a picture of myself from July of 1967. Five years old,
grinning from ear to ear, I stood on my grandmother's front porch
wearing a plastic army helmet and holding a plastic rifle. My brothers
and I would run around the house playing GI Joe. Even at that young
age, I knew that there were real men and women fighting and dying in
Vietnam. I knew that they were fighting for me and my country. They
were, and still are, my heroes.
That picture spurred me into action. I am a great admirer of Stephen
Ambrose and I especially admired his book Band of Brothers. That book
focused on the men who did the actual fighting and dying in World War
II. I wanted to write a book from the same point of view about the men
of Vietnam.
It wasn't long before I discovered Operation Medina and the men of
Charlie Company, First Battalion, First Marine Regiment, First Marine
Division. An e-mail from Ed Yates told me at once that these Marines
were special. Surrounded. Outnumbered. Out of ammunition. Never
defeated and, in the end, victorious.
Lions of Medina is a tribute to those heroes who fought desperately
for each other in a remote Vietnamese jungle. It is a tribute to my
heroes; to America's heroes. |
